Accordion Book - The Deep Blue
This book is devoted to the deep blue ever changing beauty of the Pacific Ocean along the Costa Rican coastline. On clear days the Pacific can be seen from the middle of the country atop the continental divide in the Monte Verde cloud forest. The deep blue is always a source of intense attraction.

Collage - "Deep Play"

This postcard shows the face of an impassioned artist that I use to represent all artists at the delicious moments when we are totally absorbed and in deep play about our insights. The cat and the scribble speak of the mystery and the initial scramble of emotions just before they jell in the action of the creative process.

Collage - "Contrary Odalisques"

In this collage Matisse's odalisque is observing her sisters in Costa Rica. Matisse rendered this beauty more as an idea of a person rather than a specific one. In Costa Rica the dark-eyed, dark-haired beauties are everywhere and are specific individuals: chatting incessantly on cellulars while struggling with skin-tight jeans, towering high heels and babes in arms. Matisse's luxe, calme et volupte is a contrary and welcome view.

Collage - "Mozart in San Jose"

God directing Mozart who in turn directs those Beethoven birds I painted two weeks ago. You can expect the unexpected in this country starting with the 9" diameter Hibiscus growing on the patio. And, si, there is a genus of Cardinal that lives in South America. This one got blown off course in Costa Rica before resuming flight.

Collage - "Venus Visits the Pacific"
This Venus on the half shell could be located anyplace along the Atlantic or Pacific beaches in Costa Rica, a backpacker perhaps enjoying the sun and especially the surf. The bikini must have been swept to sea. Lots of fancy shoes in this country and plenty of fresh fruit. Hm-m-m-m-m sounds like a paradise. The basis for this postcard is a past announcement of a show at the Cass Cafe in Detroit. A place with great art shows, in addition to food and synergy.

Neighborhood Musicians - Penaris Barrio

There are always a number of birds around and about in our neighborhood. Some are screeching parrots who fly in packs and appear to be having a grand time diving from tree to tree. Then there are the grackles who make the most complex combination of sounds. The flock of birds in this painting stopped me in my tracks one morning with the coordinated and dramatic development of their notes.

During the December/January holidays the local fruit and vegetable market, Zapote, is turned into a popular carnival. The billed attraction is the "Bull Fights" which means . . . guys having had mucho beer and muy gusto jump into a ring with bulls and pull their tail. This is a lot of fun for the audience and "drunks" until the bulls, who didn't get the memo, become pissed and charge.

Collage - Venice

This then represents a dream scape of Venice. A city I have only visited through lectures, essays, novels, films and photographs. Being an armchair tourist I have been an admirer of her architecture forever as it is some of the best in Italy. The figure represents the charm, the intoxication and mystery always associated with Venice.

This then is another statement about my daily life. The flowers being a continuous presence in this beautiful lush country of Costa Rica with a nod to our five volcanoes and frequent earthquake tremors. Coffee is enjoyed in the morning while tea is the afternoon choice.
